The standardized testing season is officially upon us.
Despite all the protests,opt-outs and horror stories, many of our government leaders still think standardized test overuse and abuse is okay. Our written words have had little impact on them.
That’s why I think it’s time we let them hear from our kids’ own mouths. Nothing rehearsed, just real honest feedback. Parents, would you consider recording your child as soon as they get home after a standardized test? Ask them about how the test went, what kinds of questions there were, if they finished and how they did. I think our kids’ emotional responses will have far more impact that anything we write or say.
If you choose to record your child, please protect their privacy. If you use video, obscure their faces so they don’t face potential humiliation at school. Audio recordings may be the best option.
Texas parents, I’ll be collecting these recordings and assembling them into a reel that we can share with politicians, media and the online community. Feel free to drop me a line via the comment form if you’d like to share your material. If you’re in another state and would like to spearhead collection of your children’s stories, please let me know.
Both my son and daughter took four-hour math tests today and have four-hour reading tests tomorrow.
